Our Love Story

In February 2021, Los Angeles was slowly waking up from the long quiet of the pandemic. One of the few joys of social life came from a small improv acting class tucked away in Laurel Canyon. Matt had recently joined and quickly became known for his high-energy performances. One evening, Tommi Aura, a new friend Matt had made in class, sauntered in with a beautiful new face. Her name was Miranda. After watching Matt bounce around the room like an over-caffeinated SNL cast member, she told him he was “so good,” assuming he was a professional improviser. They said a quick hello and went their separate ways, not knowing their paths would cross again just days later.

That weekend Matthew hosted a small gathering at his house. When he stepped outside, he was surprised to find Miranda in the courtyard. They picked up right where they’d left off, talking late into the night and discovering an easy connection. It was a cold February evening, so Matthew lent Miranda his jacket for the walk home. A few nights later he asked her to dinner at San Vicente Bungalows; conversation flowed effortlessly, music became a shared language, and something unmistakable began.

A few days later Miranda returned Matthew’s jacket. While chatting in the sunshine, she mentioned she’d gone to church earlier up “Mooooholland.” Matthew laughed and gently corrected her: “You mean Mulholland.” The pronunciation was too good to lose—“Mooooholland” morphed into “Booooholland,” then into a cascade of extended-oo jokes that eventually produced the nickname that remains to this day: Booski. Like so many things in their relationship, it began with a small moment, a shared laugh, and a spark that kept growing.

Since then, Miranda and Matt have traveled all over the world, but they feel most at home in the joyful, playful world they create together. No matter where they are, as long as they’re laughing, joking, and being a little silly with each other, they know they’re exactly where they’re meant to be.

We invite our guests to wear formal cocktail attire for our lakeside celebration—polished yet comfortable, with a touch of relaxed elegance. For women, consider long, knee-length, or midi dresses in light, flowy fabrics—perfect for an outdoor lawn setting. Soft blues, pastels, floral prints, or airy silhouettes pair beautifully with the lakeside scenery. Dressy sandals, low heels with wider bases, or stylish flats are recommended for walking on grass. For men, cocktail attire includes dress pants and a button-down shirt, with the option to add a lightweight blazer; ties are welcome but not required. Lighter colors and breathable fabrics are encouraged for a September evening in South Haven. Above all, please choose comfortable, lawn-friendly shoes so you can enjoy the night by the water.

*Please note there are 52 Rooms available at the inn, so please book quickly to ensure your desired room is available.*Also, we encourage our guests to bring a swimsuit for your stay, as the inn features both a pool and hot tub for guests to enjoy. Our hotel room block requires a two-night minimum stay and offers a variety of accommodations, including single rooms, doubles, two-bed options, and suites to suit your needs. We encourage you to choose the option that feels most comfortable for your stay and join us in celebrating together on the property. Van Buren State Park Spur Trail, which offers a scenic, 4-mile paved route into the City of South Haven. Along the way, visitors can access Van Buren Trail State Park (gravel surface) near 16th Avenue and continue on an additional 12 miles (south) to the City of Hartford. The Kal-Haven Trail State Park connects in South Haven and provides 33.5 miles of additional trail.

Just two miles from the inn, South Beach in South Haven is an easy go-to spot for sandy toes, lake swims, and laid-back walks out to the lighthouse. It’s the perfect place to relax, catch a sunset, and soak up those classic summer-by-the-water vibes.

South Beach

The South Haven South Pierhead Light is a lighthouse in Michigan, at the entrance to the Black River on Lake Michigan. The station was lit in 1872, and is still operational. The tower is a shortened version of the Muskegon South Pierhead Light, and replaced an 1872 wooden tower. The catwalk is original and still links the tower to shore: it is one of only four that survive in the State of Michigan.

Downtown South Haven, MI, is&nbsp;a charming, walkable, and vibrant lakeside destination featuring eclectic boutiques, local eateries, and scenic views of the Black River.
